My “Obama Defense” Episode
Heh, heh…
This afternoon, I experienced a real-life “Obama defense” episode. Thought I would share.
We were at the lunch table. The topic turned towards the esteemed “Reverend” Jeremiah Wright. Two of us went bonkers trying to explain the whole issue to another as-yet-uniformed individual. Then, from the other end of the table, a liberal chimed in, with a real cheery voice, trying to act all nonchalant: “You know, I just get so tired of the media talking about all those peripheral issues. I’m mean, there are a lot of real issues out there, and I wish they would start talking about those. You know, what’s really important in this race?”
I responded by saying, “Uh, we have to take measures of our candidates. What they think on certain issues is important, to be sure. But, it is also important to get a feeling for who they hang out with, and what kinds of characters they surround themselves with. And, this guy is bad news, any way you cut it.”
The liberal responds by saying, “Yeah, whatever happened to that lobbyist issue with McCain?”
*sigh*
So… first observation: She thinks we ought to “stick to the important issues”. But, then also wonders what happened to McCain and the lobbyist. A little inconsistent, eh?
Second, she is equating these two “peripheral” relationships. On one the one hand, we have a lobbyist who may have influenced a vote or two. On the other hand we have a spiritual mentor, who officiated at a candidate’s marriage, baptized his children, inspired a book, and served as his preacher for 20 years. That’s a liberal’s idea of “moral equivolence”.
Third, she just couldn’t bring herself to negatively react to the pseudo-sermons.
Fourth, she wants us to “talk about the real issues”, but she is defending a candidate who has yet to actually comment on any issue.
Ugh.
I think she is so intoxicated with Obama’s Aura of Hope that she can’t see anything else. “Yes, Master. You’re wish is my command.”
At the risk of jinxing the issue, I really do think this is going to undo Obama. I just can’t imagine any way he can outlive the language of those “sermons”. Of course, McCain has committed to some kinder, gentler tone of campaigning. I fear he may not attack the issue when the opportunity presents itself.
Gotta go. Daughter’s bed time. (Ray & Teresa, Claire turned seven years old today!!! Crazy, huh?)
Happy St. Paddy’s day to all.
Cliff
