Reflections On Summer Reading
National Review did not invite me to join in on their summer reading symposium. http://article.nationalreview.com/?q=ZTdhY2M0NzMzNTVlY2RlNWNhZjM5M2RhNWI3ZDFhNmE= Clearly this was an oversight on their part so I have invited myself.
What’s the best political novel you’ve ever read? Why is it the best?
I suppose that would have to be Exodus by Leon Uris. The founding of the modern state of Israel is a 20th century miracle. Uris gives that miracle all the reverence it deserves.
If there were only one book on conservatism you could recommend to a newcomer, what would it be and why?
Reflections on The Revolution in France by Edmund Burke. (Though my nom de cyber space probably should have told you that.) The first time I read that book I kept pounding on my desk saying why didn’t they listen to him. Now I wonder why don’t we listen to him.
Is there one book that you’d recommend to uplift and inspire depressed conservatives this summer?
Dinesh D’Souza: Ronald Reagan: How an Ordinary Man Became an Extraordinary Leader everytime I think the war with Islamic Jihad is impossible I remind myself that I once thought the same about the end of the Soviet Empire. Now more than ever conservatives need Ronald Reagen.
What’s your favorite WFB book and why?
Sorry though I am grateful to Mr. Buckley for the movement he has founded and for making history come to a standstill, I really don’t like reading him. A thousand most humble apologies.
What’s your favorite political movie and why?
Silk Stockings, one of Hollywood’s only honest looks at the Soviet Union and Cyd Charisse’s best dance number.
If you could read or reread one classic this summer, what would it be? What are the odds you actually do?
I re-read something by Jane Austen every season. Last spring it was Emma but I think this summer it will be Persuasion. I am Cpt. Wentworth, Sen. McCain is Anne, you do the math.
Is there any recent book that’s made you want to buy copies for everyone you know and love? Did you actually make the purchases?
America Alone by Mark Steyn. All you need to know about the 21st century in a nutshell. If I had bought if for all my loved ones they would not be speaking to me. Which come to think of it is a good reason to buy it.
Are there any summer movies you’re looking forward to?
Are there any summer movies that are not sequels, comic book characters or video games?
Would you rather listen to John McCain’s convention speech or read Dick Morris’s new book?
No question I would rather listen to chain saws than read Dick Morris. Reading Dick Morris would be a bigger shocker than the one listed below.
Name one book we’re going to be shocked you read. The Barbarian Princess by Laura Buchanan aka Florence King. Thanks to Amazon.com Florence King’s out of print bodice ripper can now be found. In between the ludicrous plot Miss King can not help but throw in some fascinating history.
