One Big Thing

In this post http://marlettsmith.com/blog/wp-admin/post.php?action=edit&post=491  besides making the case for McCain I point out that President Bush has not been the conservative most conservative pundits claimed he would be.   Over at The Corner a reader made the same point http://corner.nationalreview.com/post/?q=OWQ1Yjc5Yjk2ZTRhZjU0N2QzMDVkM2JhZTY2MTJkNWU=

Unlike the folks at NR and Rush I am not disappointed or feel betrayed that the President has turned out to be such a big spender.  Because I knew it would happen.  I knew back in 98 that “compassionate conservatism” meant “pay up taxpayers.”   So I can’t see the President’s big spending ways as a betrayal.  Anyone who sees it that way was just choosing blindness 10 years ago.  So I can judge the President free from the idea that he has betrayed conservatism, he never was a fiscal conservative and that’s that.

But I stand by this President and approve of him for the simplest reason: no terrorist has attacked any part of the USA since 9/11/01.  If you had told me on Sept 11 that we would go 6 years and 10 months without an attack on US soil I would have called you nuts.   This has not been some giant accident as liberals would have us believe.  Pres. Bush took necessary steps in improving our intelligence and treating terrorism as an act of war instead of a as a crime.  These steps are what has insured our safety for the last six years.  Without this President those steps would not have been taken.   President Bush had a lot of little things to do, and he failed at a bunch of them.  But he had one big thing to do and that was protect the USA and dismantle Al Qaeda.   The first part was a far more rousing success then I thought possible.  The second part is a work in progress, but it is in progress something I know wouldn’t be happening under a Pres. Gore or Pres. Kerry.   Likewise I am sure that in the One Big Thing of protecting this country Pres. McCain will succeed and Pres. Obama would be a most tragic failure.
