Army Sgt. Charles Wyckoff faced a life-or-death choice. With insurgents firing at his squad from behind a mud wall in southern Afghanistan, he ran across a field and crept around one end of the wall. He saw a Taliban fighter with a rifle kneeling just a few feet away, and a second standing perhaps 30 feet farther back with a rocket-propelled grenade aimed at his team.
