Beware the Green Eyed Monster
Okay first point: I do not trust Mousavi. Mousavi was a terrorist before and may be a terrorist again. I am still not wearing green and won’t pledge allegiance to a revolution till I have read their Declaration of Independence and know exactly their principles.
Burke supported the American Revolution, but not the French. because the American Revolution was based on the traditional forms of government long established in the American colonies. But the French Revolution was trying to create something out of nothing, a new form of government with no guiding principles. So far in Iran we have no idea what the Founding Principles are, or even if there are any.
BUT I agree with Mark Steyn neutrality is not an option http://bit.ly/lFEGk. The Republic of Iran is a terrorist state it has always been a terrorist state. The Republic of Iran has killed Jews as far away as Argentina and killed American soldiers in Iraq. Now they are killing their own citizens. The Mullahs must be condemned unequivocally, forcefully and often. But that doesn’t mean we have to recognize Mousavi or lend him our support. Indeed we should be constantly reminding Mousavi we don’t support terrorist states no matter who leads them. So am I saying no neutrality toward the Mullahs, but neutrality toward Mousavi? Yeah that is exactly what I am saying. It’s a strange world get used to it.
But here is where my current concern, concern subject to change along with events in Iran, lies. Let’s say a miracle happens; the Mullahs fall. Let’s say my worst fears are realized Mousavi becomes just another terrorist support. Now Mousavi gets to say “well it is the US fault for not supporting Democracy in Iran.” Yes I know Islamic terrorists always say it is the US fault. But in this case Mousavi will have a point. Obama is giving Mousavi the gift of plausible deniability.
This is hard, this is painful, people are dying and nuclear weapons are balanced over the whole mess like the sword of Damocles. We need more careful, deliberative thinking than one learns by seeking out the “most Marxist professors” at Harvard. Be afraid.
