Holiday Cheer
In my little corner of the reddest state of all we live in the shadow of Camp Pendeleton USMC base. Since the marines are a fixture here, the cheering sights at our Christmas Parade may not mean anything. But I will take any happy signs I can get.
The parade featured the brilliant high kicks of a local karate school starring BurkeanSon. First up was the USMC marching band playing The Halls of Montezuma, which duly received an enthusiastic standing ovation. Following the marching band was the Mayor and Town Council, who are busily raising taxes and cutting vital city services, while building an elaborate new Town Hall that looks like a Greek Temple. (What is with liberals and Greek Temples?) As the city officials passed not a peep, not a single hand clapping. Military good said the crowd, politicians bad. To which I say “well duh!”
After the brilliant karate moves of many fine young people passed by I left to avoid the “World Peace” float, featuring a giant poster of everyone’s favorite Nobel Peace Prize recipient, Fearless Leader. I wouldn’t look at the float but I couldn’t help but notice the dead silence. I had steeled myself for the applause, but nope not a peep. The Great One was greeted with the same stony silence as our Mayor who builds himself a fancy new office while refusing to fill in pot holes.
Perhaps living amongst US Marines and retired US Marines most of the people here understand that World Peace doesn’t come from endless speeches but from men not afraid to die to stop the disturbers of said Peace. The Marine Corps has been liberating oppressed people from viscous tyrants for 200 years. Seems like the job of a true deliverer of Peace to me.
